Cecily went on a spice tour in Zanzibar recently, and she did not forget her friends in Mwanza.
She brought us raw nutmeg and cloves and cinnamon sticks and vanilla bean and red chili peppers and masala chai blend and most glorious of all-- a heaping, generous amount of saffron for eight bucks. Did you know that saffron is so outrageously expensive (it starts at like $500/pound) because the red threads are handpicked from crocuses like this:
This all led to a massive search for recipes that call for saffron. Coming soon through our kitchen will be saffron rice, saffron risotto, paella and braised chicken with saffron and leeks.
It’s pretty mind-boggling that we live so close to Zanzibar, where all these fabulous spices grow. Another reason to give thanks.

The Saffron is hilarious. We bought a bunch in Asia because it was so cheap there and never used it... Good for you on finding recipes for it!
ReplyDeleteoh that unused saffron makes me sad! maybe you still have it? you should try a simple saffron rice! really yummy! =)
