IJM

So the main reason we went to Nairobi this past weekend (besides wanting to get away from Mwanza for a bit) was to visit one of the field offices of International Justice Mission (IJM). 

Since I first heard their founder, Gary Haugen, speak at a conference in 1996, I’ve been fascinated with their work--and like so many other friends, have often wished I were a lawyer working at one of their offices around the world.

After a flurry of emails back and forth to IJM staff in the US and Nairobi late last week, we found a good deal on flights to Kenya and before we knew it, we were stuck in Friday night Nairobi traffic on our way to a hotel in the city centre. 

IJM’s Kenya office focuses primarily on securing justice for victims of sexual violence and police abuse. The morning of our visit, the office was a beehive of activity--children coloring, meetings in session, computers getting fixed...Counselors were providing aftercare to children who had survived various forms of abuse. 

We're so thankful for the opportunity to meet some of the interns and staff, and are grateful that they made time for us on such short notice.
