This past week, I was able to work with fellow pediatricians at the BIPAI (Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative) clinic in Malawi's capital city, Lilongwe. The clinic opened in November 2006.
There are about ten American doctors working at this clinic, alongside a Malawian Executive Director and Malawian nurses. Together, they see about 100 patients a day and also facilitate training of local medical officers.
Tanzania is the newest country to join the BIPAI family. Two clinics are currently under construction, one in Mwanza and the other in Mbeya. Our team in Mwanza eagerly awaits the completion of our own clinic (which will look similar to the one pictured above) sometime in the spring/summer of 2010.
It was really encouraging for me to be able to visit this site and have a picture of what exciting things there are to come in Mwanza.
