happy 4 to us

Four years ago, we walked out of Knox Chapel at the University of Toronto to "It's a beautiful day". Three years ago, we got held up at 5th Avenue by the Puerto Rican Day Parade while walking to the Central Park Boat House for brunch. Two years ago, in pouring rain, we tried to get dessert at Payard but were foiled by a "Closed for Private Event" sign. Last year, we staggered out of Mario Batali's Babbo, completely stuffed and happy, and went back to an apartment full of boxes.

This year, we'll go to the Indian restaurant we go to pretty much every week, and order pretty much the same thing we always order. Just a few months ago, the staff and owner of this Indian restaurant were surprised to learn that we were married, and not just "boyfriend and girlfriend". They thought we looked much to happy together to have been married for a few years already.

So this year, living in a place where men discard wives as they please, where actual friendship and partnership between husband and wife is an oddity, and where more than half of all women report having experienced violence in their marriage, we know what a sacred gift our marriage is, and can scarcely find the right words to give thanks for it. To many more!
