Update on the "Denial, Fear or Hopelessness?" post:
Before agreeing to enroll her HIV positive granddaughter in the pediatric HIV clinic, Grandma gave us an “assignment” (those were her words). She wanted us, the medical team, to consider letting her just go home with the baby, and her reason was a good one: She has two other grandchildren in secondary school, and grandma YC pays their school fees by selling produce. She had to get back to work.
Our response to her “assignment” was “NO!”
It was probably the Tanzanian resident who finally convinced Grandma not to leave, but to take her granddaughter down to the HIV clinic where the child will be monitored and given the appropriate medications. She finally agreed, and now the two of them will stay in Bugando for another month while the baby gets treatment for malnutrition. After that, they'll need to take the hour long mini-bus ride to Mwanza every month for further follow-up and to pick up medications. If the baby girl is given medication and monitored properly, she could go on to live a relatively normal life.
We’re so glad Grandma came around.
