Lonely Planet guides and fellow travelers agree: it's good to rethink one's wardrobe before a trip to Africa.
Recommendations for the What Not to Wear list include:
1. Shorts or skirts above the knee (ankle length is the best)
2. Strappy tank tops, tight fitting clothes
3. Anything brand new
4. White clothing
5. Expensive-Looking-Anything, but especially sunglasses and sneakers
6. Wedding rings and dangling jewelry
Of course, being thoughtful about what you wear is just common sense, and shows respect for a more modest culture. But as silly as it may sound, rethinking our wardrobes has been causing me some distress. Maybe this is because, even though it seems like small potatoes, it's also a significant reminder that we've never made such a big jump before. And I'm not sure how we'll do.
New cities yes. New continents yes. New culture, yes.
Moving to Tanzania involves all of that and then a jump from one of the wealthiest zip codes in the USA to one of the poorest countries in the world.
How will we manage?
What will the people there think of us?
Is there any way to make any of this easier?
Pardon a moment of mild sappiness:
And love is not the easy thing...
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind
