After almost 3 years in New York City, we are getting ready for our next big adventure. This July, we'll move to Mwanza, Tanzania where Duncan has accepted a position with the Baylor Pediatric AIDS Corps. Duncan's work will involve both clinical care and the training of medical students and doctors at Bugando Hospital.
This is a part of the world where average life expectancy is 50 years old and per capita income is about $319 USD. It's also a part of the world full of natural wonders: Mount Kilimanjaro and the magnificent Serengeti National Park are within a few hours drive. Mwanza itself is situated on Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile.
In early July we'll travel to Houston. Duncan will participate in two weeks of HIV/AIDS training at Baylor, and hopefully I'll get to read and write to my heart's content. We're scheduled to fly to Tanzania on July 25th.
We know that moving to Africa will not be easy. There are many logistical details that need to be worked out: how to store, sell or ship or belongings, finding me a job, and wrapping up our responsibilities in New York well, just to name a few!
While it's hard to think of leaving all the comforts and attractions of New York, it's hardest to leave our community of family, friends and colleagues here in the city (and to feel even more distant from all of you in the US, Canada and abroad!) We hope we'll find a new 'family' away from home.
